Pullman District: 10701-10705 South Cottage Grove: After_(Photo courtesy of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks)
Famous for being the first planned industrial town in America, Pullman was built to provide modern, safe, and well-built housing for employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company. Park Bank Initiatives, a bank-affiliated non-profit community development organization, purchased the house and carriage house in foreclosure and renovated them for affordable housing. The project included masonry repairs, installation of new wood windows and new wood porches matching the historic configuration, new wood siding and shingles, and the repair of the last remaining carriage-way arched opening in the district. The Pullman District was designated as a Chicago Landmark on October 16, 1972 and expanded on June 9, 1993.
