The Historic Michigan Boulevard District is the city’s preeminent landmark district, reflecting the city's lakefront development from a small town to a booming metropolis during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The district, with its “postcard view” of downtown, is one of the most familiar images of the city. The Buckingham Building was designed by Holabird & Roche and completed in 1930. It embodies the Art Deco style, in contrast to the more classical-based styles of buildings in the district. This project converted a vacant and severely deteriorated office building into student dormitories. The exterior and interior rehabilitation included new insulated windows, new storefronts, brick and terra-cotta repair and restoration, tuckpointing, and a new vegetative ‘green’ roof. This project was assisted through the Cook County Class L Property Tax Incentive Program and Federal 20% Rehabilitation Tax Credits. The Historic Michigan Boulevard District was designated a Chicago Landmark on February 27, 2002.
